Melanotan 2 is a synthetic peptide that studies have demonstrated to exhibit potent tanning (melanogenesis) and libido enhancing effects. Melanotan II is a variant of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a melanocortin peptide hormone which is produced naturally in the body. Structurally, Melanotan II is a cyclic heptapeptide analog of the alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that tends to induce skin tanning. Melanotan II has the additional effect of increasing libido naturally through stimulation of the melanocortin receptors.
Melanotan II developed at the University of Arizona is a synthetic analog of the naturally occurring melanocortin peptide hormone alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that in usage has been shown to have melanogenesis (tanning) and aphrodisiac effects in preliminary studies and clinical trials.[1][2][3] It is a cyclic lactam analog of α-MSH with the amino acid sequence Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2.
